Elderberry clippings

We have different types of elderberry growing on our farm.  We usually have clippings available around the beginning of March.

We will provide them in a baggie with a paper towel.  It will be damp.  Keep these in the refrigerator until 4 weeks after your last frost date.  Make sure they stay slightly damp in the refrigerator.

When it is time for planting, stick the angled cut into the ground up and over the nodule at the bottom.  This is where the roots will sprout from.

The first year, you probably will not see any berries.  The second year, you will.  You can usually harvest around the end of July or beginning of August.

After harvesting, wait until the following February and cut the elderberry to the ground.  Leave about a foot sticking up.  This sounds drastic but by doing this, you will get a much better harvest next year.  Do this every February/March and your harvest will be bountiful.
